Plans for an urban renewal project have been made to transform Box Hill with a 48 storey skyscraper, a new town square, and a world-class retail precinct creating over 2,400 construction jobs.
Vicinity Centres’ new project is claimed to be one of Victoria’s biggest private urban development projects as it transforms 5.5 hectares of land into a rejuvenated town centre.
The multipurpose project will accommodate over 6,000 workers and 3,800 residents with its first stage of the project ready by 2023.
Vicinity Centres has revealed their ten-year transformation project also includes building an amphitheatre to encourage community events, art, music and entertainment.
The project will be delivered over 10 years and in three stages and development applications for the public space and commercial office building have now been lodged.
An application to go ahead with the residential tower is expected to be lodged by Vicinity mid-year.
They plan to include the use of new walkways and roads to connect offerings with Whitehorse Road and consolidate existing retail and transport hubs. The project will also include a dedicated Asian fresh food dining, hotels and restaurants.

Carolyn Viney, Vicinity Centre’s Chief Development Officer told the Herald Sun that Box Hill is Victoria’s fastest-growing metropolitan centre outside of the CBD. The suburb has on average 26 million visitors per year.
She said, “Our vision builds on Box Hill’s planned future growth as well as its existing strengths, including its longstanding reputation as a key destination to visit for fresh food and exciting flavours from around the world.”
“Vicinity’s vision also draws on the already enviable status of Box Hill as one of Melbourne’s busiest rail and bus transport hubs, nearby health and education facilities, and its prominent, elevated position commanding generous views of the surrounding landscape,” said Viney.
