Watpac has been named preferred builder for an $84 million vertical senior secondary campus on the former Fitzroy Gasworks site at 433 Smith Street, bordered by Alexandra and Queens Parades. Construction is expected to create 250 jobs.
The project is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s commitment to deliver 100 new schools between 2019 and 2026.
The campus will be shared between Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College’s senior cohort, and will create capacity for up to 650 new students.
The campus will be one of seven government vertical schools, joining existing South Melbourne Primary and Prahran and Richmond High Schools, and three others in the pipeline including Docklands and Fishermans Bend Primary Schools and a new campus for McKinnon Secondary.
Design work began in 2018, with development of the site being managed by Development Victoria.
Consultations with the local community and stakeholders were undertaken in 2016 and 2017 to develop a master plan for the site which has heritage status.
The site is also expected to be home to around 1,100 public housing apartments, a community centre and 8 per cent will become public open space.
The site is contaminated due to its former use as a gasworks, and is currently under remediation, work which requires excavation of up to 12m of soil and can take up to two years.
Watpac has previously been engaged by the State Government for the Schools Project, and has delivered 15 schools so far.
As part of the Learning Communities Victoria consortium with Spotless Group and Amber Infrastructure, Watpac has successfully constructed $291 million worth of primary, secondary and special schools, including Mernda Central College, which was awarded ‘Best New Construction/Entire New Education Facility’ at the 2018 Learning Environments Australasia Awards.
Watpac also joined the Plenary Schools consortium to design and construct 10 schools in Queensland as part of the State Government’s $1.5 billion 30-year school building scheme.
In 2017, Pimpana State Primary School was awarded in the Education Facilities over $10 million category at the Master Builders Queensland (Gold Coast) awards.
Construction on the Gasworks school is set to begin this year and be completed in time for Term 1 2022.
