The Hickory-built Hotel Chadstone MGallery by Sofitel and accompanying Chadstone Link were officially opened at Chadstone Shopping Centre last week.
The Bates Smart-designed hotel, constructed for Vicinity Centres and Gandel Group and managed by Accor Hotels features 250 five-star rooms that sit over 12 storeys, a rooftop conservatory bar and dining with expansive views of Port Phillip Bay, the Dandenong Ranges and the Melbourne CBD, indoor swimming pool and wellness centre.
The Chadstone Link, which connects the hotel with the shopping centre and Tower One of the commercial office precinct, is a unique glulam structure with tensile fabric roofing, designed by MAKE Architects and also built by Hickory.
In order to complete the project in under 18 months, Hickory self-performed a lot of the work.
Project Manager Sam Clarke said “we did the whole structure, pre-cast stairs, structural steel and façade ourselves along with a fair amount of work internally.”
“We controlled the whole production line and delivery times which meant we could work a lot quicker. We started the structure in May and by December we were working on the Level 22 façade.”
Hotel Chadstone is the first hotel to target a 5-star Green Star Rating.
“We’re very proud of the quality of this project, with high-end finishes and a 5-star Green Star rating and 4-star NABERS rating,” Clarke said.
Development of the hotel is part of Vicinity Centres’ broader strategy to build more mixed-use destinations, capitalising on Melbourne’s southeast as a major growth corridor.
Chadstone General Manager Fiona Mackenzie said “from a portfolio perspective, the hotel concept could be used across the group’s platform, where space and demand is available.”
Construction began earlier this year on a high-end residential development dubbed ‘Sky Garden’ in the air space above another Vicinity shopping centre, The Glen in Glen Waverley.
Vicinity CEO and managing director Grant Kelly said “our strategy takes advantage of our shopping centres’ great locations around Australia as more and more people seek to live in areas which satisfy a range of diverse lifestyle needs.”
Hickory is pleased to announce strong growth in its portfolio of hotel projects for the 2018 - 2019 financial year, with five hotel projects in various stages of completion.
They include the near complete Holiday Inn Express in Southbank, a 23-storey hotel with 345 rooms, Hyatt Centric, a luxury hotel with 278 suites across 25 floors, the 24 level Holiday Inn Express, Little Collins with 312 suites and Mojo Ovolo Hotel, a boutique, 123-room hotel in South Yarra.
