Icon has been given approval to build an $80 million mixed-use development at 2 Brighton Street in Richmond.
The building will comprise 78 apartments set across 10 levels, with a ground floor retail tenancy, rooftop garden and central open garden on level 3.
Plans for the site, which has been dubbed The Richmond, and is a consolidated land parcel of six allotments totalling around 1,300 square metres, were first lodged in 2018.
Senior Development Manager Georgina Goldsworthy said the site’s position is its main selling point.
“The project is positioned perfectly to capture the best Richmond has to offer, being a stone’s throw to both Swan and Church streets and on the cusp of Cremorne,”
“The connectivity and amenity that come with the location are unrivalled and The Richmond will cater to a range of purchaser types who are looking to live in this area,” Goldsworthy said.
Designed by Rob Kennon Architects, the site will comprise a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, with interiors by Hecker Guthrie.
Architectural cues for the modernist design have been taken from local and international apartment projects including nearby Fairlie Flats in South Yarra.
The building will feature a central open-air atrium with vertical gardens that open out to the main garden.
Glass walkways will link the upper levels of the building, providing natural light and views of the central garden on level three.
Icon’s shift back to residential comes as a result of a boom in office developments in neighbouring Cremorne, said Goldsworthy.
“There’s a lot of demand in Richmond for residential. All those start-ups and technology and creative industries in Cremorne bring people. And they want to work, socialise and live in the same area,” Goldworthy said.
Icon knows the area well, with a number of projects currently underway in Richmond and Cremorne, including a commercial office building at 600 Church Street.
Named Church, the $50 million office tower has secured real estate website Domain as anchor tenant, and is set for completion this year.
