Lendlease has won the contract for a $500 million infield redevelopment of Melbourne Airport Terminals 2 and 3.
The project, part of Melbourne Airport’s Major Development Plan, will see T2’s footprint increase by 15,000 square metres, creating 3,500m2 of retail space and a further 4,500m2 for five dedicated airline lounges.
Terminal 2 will be extended to four storeys, with a mezzanine areas for restaurants and bars and larger gate lounges to accommodate increased international travel.
A rooftop piazza will also be built, with an eatery and bar spanning 600m2 that will contain a viewing deck with views of the airfield.
The retail expansion has been designed to improve overall airport functionality, increasing seating in the main International Departures area for passengers and back of house storage space for airlines.
The expansion will also accommodate the Airport’s future plans for a third, north-south runway, which if approved, would commence construction as early as 2022.
Other projects currently underway at Melbourne Airport include upgrades to its International Arrivals hall, and construction of a $60 million elevated roadway linking the Tullamarine Freeway to Terminal 4 directly.
The T4 Express Link is the first stage of the Airport’s plan to improve roadside access, with a further $260 million allocated for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 upon successful completion.
Construction of the T2 expansion is set to commence this year, with an estimated completion date in mid-late 2023.
