Lendlease Wins Contract for AU$2.7 Billion Birmingham Project in England

Sydney-based construction company Lendlease have won preferred bidder for a multi-billion dollar urban redevelopment project, in the City of Birmingham in England. The news comes as Lendlease rapidly grows its European pipeline, and wins its second project with Birmingham City.

The Birmingham Smithfield redevelopment project will take place in the heart of Britain’s second largest city, converting a market district into a mixed-use residential, retail and leisure precinct. The precinct is expected to contain more than 2000 homes by project completion.

The win comes shortly after Lendlease was contracted to build the Birmingham City Council’s Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village. The $625 million contract won last November involves the construction of 1400 housing units in preparation for the 2022 games.

The Birmingham Smithfield development will provide a new home for the historic and much-loved Bullring retail markets. It will also include a new public square, integrated public transport, and a renewed green space with community facilities. The new development aims to provide the community with a family destination, while retaining its historic charm.

Part of Birmingham’s Big City Plan, which kicked off in 2010, the Birmingham Smithfield project is just one of several redevelopments intended to help grow the city centre by more than 25%. Birmingham Smithfield lies adjacent to the Bullring and New Street Station, and is only a short walk from the city’s new high-speed Terminus Station, due for completion by 2026.

Councillor Ian Ward, the Leader of Birmingham City Council, has cited Lendlease as a long-standing construction company who will bring added value to the momentous redevelopment.

“We are extremely excited to be working with Lendlease, who are an internationally leading developer with a proven track record of bringing forward major development schemes,” said Mr. Ward.

“The delivery of Birmingham Smithfield will be a major boost for Birmingham. With the new cultural and leisure attractions, the public realm, new homes, and retail markets, the development will appeal to both national and international audiences. Alongside these fantastic new facilities, the development will also deliver substantial benefits for the people of Birmingham.”

Mr. Ward also praised the partnership between Birmingham City Council and Lendlease for the jobs and economic opportunities it will bring to the area.

“Lendlease have committed to invest in the local community and create thousands of new jobs and training opportunities. This scheme will create a legacy for the citizens of Birmingham and become an exemplar for inclusive economic growth.”

Lendlease won the bid for the Birmingham Smithfield redevelopment after a lengthy OJEU Competitive Dialogue Procurement process. As a leading international property and infrastructure development company, Lendlease has delivered several major projects across the UK, including Kent’s iconic Bluewater shopping centre.

Lendlease are currently working on the International Quarter London, a major commercial scheme in Stratford, as well as South London’s Elephant Park.

Liam Fox, the Secretary of State for Department of International Trade, also spoke in support of the contract.

“I’m delighted to welcome this significant investment into Birmingham, which will bring jobs and prosperity to the city and surrounding area; also creating substantial opportunities for the local supply chain. It demonstrates the significant potential of the Midlands Engine region at a time when overseas investment into the UK is at its highest level ever.”

The Smithfield redevelopment is expected to take place over the next 15 years, due for completion in 2034.
