Three top tier builders are in competition to win contracts for Melbourne University’s prized new Student Precinct.
The precinct project, which is a joint creative venture between the student union and the University of Melbourne, has been in the works since 2016.
While a builder has not yet been contracted for the job, several architects have been involved in the design stage. Led by Lyons Architecture, the team includes Koning Eizenberg Architects, Breathe Architecture, NMBW Architecture Studio, and others.
The new student precinct will be a vibrant centre for services and activities. It will be located in the heart of the campus, close to local public transport.
Among the builders competing for the job, Kane Constructions are currently in the process of erecting four new schools in the Melbourne suburbs.

Meanwhile, Lendlease have recently wrapped up the Ian Potter Southbank Centre, another University of Melbourne development, and Multiplex have kicked off a mass timber construction project worth $100m for La Trobe University.
The precinct is expected to provide students with a world-class hub for the entire Parkville campus. Covering a space of 37,000 square metres, the precinct will consist of nine new or refurbished buildings and landscaped spaces.
The various architects have been assigned different areas of the precinct, and are expected to make unique and original contributions to the design.
Co-creation aims to make students a vital part of the governance and design of the space. Since its commencement, the Project Team have engaged some 12000 students in planning events and activities.
The project is also being developed in accordance with the university’s
Reconciliation Action Plan 3, Sustainability Plan, and its Food & Retail Strategy.
Works on the precinct are due to commence early 2020 and wrap up in 2022, when the UMSU services and activities relocate to the precinct.
