Multiplex has announced it will continue its relationship with Monash University, delivering an upgrade to its existing site at 750 Collins Street.
The Tier-1 builder will redevelop the 37,300sq m office building, expanding it to include 42,000sq m of floor space and consolidating Monash College into a single campus in the heart of Docklands.
The campus-style building was originally completed in 2007. Its upgrade has been designed by Lyons Architects, whose education portfolio includes the University of Adelaide Medical and Nursing Schools building and the University of Melbourne Arts Music Student Centre.
Monash became anchor tenant of the site in 2017, filling all 10 floors, around the same time Monash College acquired a 6,000sq m space at 120 Spencer Street.
Other significant developments Multiplex has delivered for Monash University include the $81 million Biomedical Learning and Teaching building and the $225 million Monash Learning and Teaching building, both at the Clayton campus.
Then 30,000sq m Monash Learning and Teaching Building was completed in 2018, and provided the university with a new facade, linking the campus to the outside community through a new regional transport interchange.
In 2016, Multiplex completed a $145 million on-campus student accommodation precinct, comprising four residential buildings with over 1,000 studio apartments, informal learning spaces and retail.
News of the latest project comes as more and more suburban institutions make concerted efforts to edge into the CBD, where the current office vacancy rate sits below 4%.
The market is only set to tighten, as despite predictions of the highest annual increase of office space in 30 years, with 400,000sq m to become available in 2020, almost 90% of that is pre-committed.
