Schools Construction Roundup: Building the Future of Education

Victoria is named the education state for good reason, with $3.8 billion invested to construct and upgrade schools across the state.

With large projects both currently under construction and in the pipeline, education infrastructure remains a steady source of construction work for Victorians.

Here’s a summary of construction work in the education sector across Victoria.

At Tender
Kilvington Grammar, Ormond

Approx. budget: $4-5 million

Melbcon, Newpol, 2Construct, May Constructions

This project will involve the demolition of the existing building, and construction of a new two-storey administration building. The new facilities will include multiple offices which will house the school principal and other management staff, new reception area and lobby, meeting rooms, storage rooms, and kitchen/ bathroom facilities all accessible via a lift.

St Clare’s Primary School Stage 3, Truganina

Approx. budget: $3-4 million

Newpol, Dura, Fimma

St Clare’s Primary School will receive a new two-storey classroom building with associated civil works in Stage 3 of their construction works. After the completion of Stage 1 works, the school opened in January of 2015.

St John the Apostle Primary School Stage 3, Tarneit

Approx. budget $5-10 million

Newpol, Melbcon, Lloyd Group, Raysett

Melbcon have previously completed Stage 2 of construction at the Tarneit school. Stage 3 consists of a new building, housing a learning centre and multipurpose hall.

Siena Catholic PS Stage 3, Lucas

Approx. budget $2-3 million


This project involves the construction of a new learning centre building, featuring multiple learning spaces, studios, storage areas, meeting rooms and toilet facilities.

Catholic College O’Connor Learning Centre, Sale

Approx. budget $250-500k


This project involves a small extension to the school – a single storey addition, inclusive of a library building, additional offices and workrooms.

Sacre Couer Stage 1B, Glen Iris

Approx. budget $15-20 million

Devco, Ireland Brown, Monaco Hickey, Bldg.Eng, SJ Higgins

Dubbed the ‘Learning Commons,’ this project is for the construction of a new Resource, Science, Technology and Creative Arts Building. The plans are pending council approval, but will feature new learning spaces, libraries and staff workspaces, and will connect to the existing heritage buildings within the school.

Melbourne Grammar Myer Music Centre

Approx. budget $5-10 million

Maben, McCorkell Constructions, Kane

The project involves refurbishing the Myer Music building, a former house at 3 Bromby Street and the construction of a new infill building to link the complex together.

East Bentleigh Primary School

Approx. budget $3-4 million

May Constructions

East Bentleigh Primary will receive a new single storey school building, to house performing arts facilities and new classrooms.

VSBA Capital Works Projects

Budget: $161 million

Adco Constructions

This project involves 65 schools across Victoria. Split across four batches and scheduled for completion in mid-2021.

VSBA New Schools Program

Budget: $150 million

The project will result in eight new primary schools, some with Early Learning Centres, delivered across growth areas in Victoria in time for the 2020 school year.

Echuca Schools Regeneration Project

Budget: $23 million

Fairbrother Constructions

Continuation of The Twin Rivers Primary School and the development of a new Echuca P-12 Special School at the same site.

VSBA Growth Area Schools Project

Budget: $180 million

Kane Constructions

Kane Constructions will deliver nine new schools located in the growth areas of Melbourne, after being appointed in late 2017. The first six schools were completed for the 2019 school year and the balance will be ready in time for the 2020 school year.

Docklands Primary School (interim name)

Budget: $19.8 million

Monaco Hickey

Creating a new primary school to meet demand for inner-city education options, the new school will include a library, music and arts rooms, administration areas and outdoor learning terraces.

Point Cook South Senior Secondary School

Budget: $53 million

Kane Constructions

The $53 million project will create a new senior secondary school for up to 1,100 students. The year 10-12 school will be a three-storey vertical school that will include science, technology, workshops, media and ICT spaces and a library, and will also feature a performing arts and physical education building, a sports field and multi-use courts.

St Leonards Brighton

Budget: $40.5 million

Adco Constructions

St Leonards Brighton Campus is building a new Performing Arts Centre with a 600-seat auditorium, stage and background area, orchestra pit, change and bathroom areas, storage spaces, lift, foyer and cloak area, kitchen and bathroom facilities for patrons, server and a sound shell at the rear of the main auditorium.  Plans also include a box room and plan floor for the wings of the stage. A three-storey learning building with teaching spaces, learning areas, canteen, lecturette, and exam area is also to be constructed.

Sunshine College

Budget: $28.5 million

Hutchinson Builders

Hutchinson will deliver the construction of a dedicated STEM facility for both Sunshine College campuses and a library, learning environments and administration areas for the west campus. Discovery of asbestos has postponed construction of the performing arts centre, the gym and the Years 7-8 learning building.
