The role of Commercial Manager is multi-faceted and involves many elements of business management. They are responsible for overseeing project finances as construction is underway. They are also able to pursue new business opportunities for the company, identify ways to grow the company and its revenue, and negotiate contracts to secure future projects.
Commercial Managers should have a strong background in the construction industry, as they oversee the work of others within the business. They usually have a team of quality surveyors working directly underneath them, though the role and responsibilities of the Commercial Manager may vary by organisation.
Other duties typically performed by the Commercial Manager may include reporting on project finances and key performance indicators; offering financial guidance to others within the business in relation to projects and contracts; resolving any issues of a contractual or commercial nature; and mentoring a team of quantity surveyors.
Candidates for a Commercial Manager role must have exceptional communication skills to liaise with clients and stakeholders, and to effectively manage others within the business. They must be able to negotiate and have a strong awareness of the industry and commercial projects. Commercial Managers must have attention to detail, and be able to pick out key information from texts to share with senior management. They must also have an understanding of construction law and how this affects the business, as well as the relevant legislation surrounding contracts within the industry.
