John Holland to Build Revised Victorian Heart Hospital

The Victorian Heart Hospital, located on the Monash Clayton campus, has expanded from the original scope of work and will now house 206 beds - 11 more than originally proposed.

The hospital is set to create over 1,700 jobs during construction and, once open, employ more than 850 people across clinical care and research.

Work on the site began late last year, and John Holland Group is set to lead construction of the hospital - the first of its kind in Australia - to be complete in 2022.

The $564 million hospital will feature biophilic design, improving health and wellbeing outcomes by increasing patient connectivity with the environment, with inclusions such as internal gardens, natural light-filled spaces and views of external native landscapes.

Once complete, the hospital will have the capacity for 2,150 cardiac surgeries and scope for 28,300 cardiac emergency presentations and 108,000 consultations.

John Holland Executive General Manager - Building, David Lehmann said the hospital will provide first-class health care.

“This hospital will raise the bar for patient-centred design in Australian hospital construction, and we couldn’t be more excited to start work on this life-saving facility,” Lehmann said.

The building’s environmental impact will also be minimised by using locally-sourced building materials and making use of natural climate conditions for energy-efficient, resilient heating and cooling methods.

The hospital is also set to house the Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre, the research arm of MonashHeart and a research centre of Monash University, expanding opportunities to place Australia at the fore of cardiovascular research.

MonashHeart at Monash Health director Stephen Nicholls called the hospital a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape our approach to clinical care, research and teaching for heart disease.”

John Holland has a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector, having recently delivered the new Calvary Adelaide Hospital and Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital.

Construction is on track to commence this year, with completion due in 2022.
