Icon Continues Winning Streak with Deakin Uni Student Accommodation Project
Icon Co has been announced preferred contractor for an 8,856 sq m student accommodation building at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus.
The win comes alongside a number of other projects, such as the Epworth Eastern Hospital Flats redevelopment in Box Hill, a $300m mixed-use tower at 627 Chapel Street and the Calvary Bethlehem redevelopment in Caulfield.
The $50 million project will also add to Icon’s pipeline of student accommodation developments in Victoria, which includes the 488-bed Iglu building on Claremont Street, South Yarra, due for completion in February 2020.
Icon will construct 32 ten-bedroom dwellings with associated communal buildings including common rooms and administration, and will complete external landscaping and services.

The win is a strategic one for Icon, moving into Geelong to challenge mainstay Kane Constructions.
Kane is currently working on two projects at the Waurn Ponds campus, a $14 million research centre and a $23 million refurbishment of existing KA Building. Both are scheduled for completion in early-mid 2020.
Icon’s move into Geelong comes on the back of an apartment boom in the coastal city that includes $45 million residential development The Mercer overlooking Corio Bay.
Geelong’s construction boom can be attributed to the influx of government agencies opening offices, such as the completion of a new NDIA building on Malop Street, which has seen Built Construction take home a number of awards.
