Lendlease to Commence $306M Early Works on New Women’s and Children’s Hospital

Lendlease is set to commence the $306m early works on Adelaide’s new Women’s and Children’s Hospital (nWCH).

The builder finalised early works plans with the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport earlier this month.

The first stages of construction will include an eight-storey car park and central energy plant, set for construction next year after site investigations kick off this month.

The 1,300-space car park begins in the second quarter of 2024, completing in early 2027 and is set to significantly increase parking capacity.

The car park’s design complements the surrounding park lands, featuring disability car parks, pram parking, and spaces for consumers and staff.

Solar-paneled roof, 600kw capacity, 150 bicycle spaces, showers, and change rooms are also planned.

Simultaneously, work starts on the hospital’s two-storey central energy facility to house electrical and mechanical components, making it South Australia’s first 100% electric public hospital.

Preliminary efforts involve relocating engineering services for the Adelaide Gaol, establishing a stormwater outlet structure, and initiating car park site demolition.

The full scope of works for Adelaide’s new WCH hospital include:

  • 500 treatment spaces
  • 170 outpatient rooms
  • 43 Emergency Department treatment spaces
  • 14 Women’s Assessment Service treatment spaces
  • two air bridges and a bridge over the rail line onsite
  • a 1215-space car park
  • site preparation works associated to clearing the site, including re-location of existing services
  • expansion of Port Road Bridge to include an additional lane for vehicles
  • a new pedestrian and cyclist path along the southern side of Port Road, and
  • intersection upgrades, road realignments and associated works.

The project will include environmentally sustainable design features such as rainwater capture and storage, design for waste-to-landfill minimisation, resilient design to withstand climate change events and low emissions building materials.

Designed by architectural joint venture A+ (Woods Bagot with Bates Smart, Jacobs and UK practice BDP), the hospital will be co-located with Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide Biomed City on Port Road in the central city.

The $1.95 billion project is being delivered over two-stages and is slated for full completion in 2030-2031.
