
Following the federal government’s backing Victoria’s preferred route for the airport’s rail line, construction could begin as early as 2020. The route has been locked in by the Morrison government.
The rail line will travel from the city to the airport, and will include a new super-station located in Sunshine. This option would also allow for future major regional rail upgrades.
Sunshine’s option would cost between $8 and $13 billion and is a more popular option than Maribyrnong or Craigieburn routes.
Ahead of the Victoria state election, major parties are in agreement and supportive of the proposed Sunshine route, opposition leader Matthew Guy described it as “the only sensible route”. Following election results, construction plans will begin swiftly.
A private consortium including Melbourne Airport, Southern Cross station, and Metro Train has revealed a $5 billion offer to help build the project.
Plans may include a massive new tunnel spanning from the CBD to Sunshine. The Andrews Government has considered the tunnel in its Western Rail Plan would also improve train services to Geelong and Ballarat.
